When we think about learning, we often divide it into two categories: the creative and the logical. For instance, poetry and algebra may seem worlds apart—one is filled with emotions, vivid imagery, and artistic expression, while the other is grounded in numbers, rules, and precise solutions. But what if we told you that studying both of them is not only beneficial, but necessary for a well-rounded, enriched life? Here’s why we should embrace both poetry and algebra in our education.

Now, I will be honest, poetry is my least favourite aspect to teach, and I definitely do not reach for an anthology in my spare time, but having researched for this blog, I am now more willing to give poetry some more of my time. Poetry is often considered one of the purest forms of art. At its core, it is an exploration of human emotion, expression, and experience. But beyond its emotional richness, poetry teaches us essential skills like empathy, interpretation, and creative thinking.
Empathy and Connection Reading poetry helps us step into the shoes of others, seeing the world from different perspectives. Whether it’s the anguish of a 17th-century poet, the joy of an abstract expression, or the rhythmic flow of nature, poetry allows us to connect with the human experience on a personal level. This helps build empathy, which is essential in our increasingly interconnected world.
Creativity and Expression Poetry encourages us to think outside the box, to stretch the limits of our imagination. It shows us that there are multiple ways to express an idea, a feeling, or an observation. In writing poetry, we learn how to use language not just for communication, but for creative expression. These skills can enhance our ability to solve problems in innovative ways in all areas of life.
Critical Thinking and Interpretation Poetry doesn’t always offer clear answers, and it often requires deeper analysis. The ambiguity in poetry forces us to think critically, interpret symbolism, and draw connections that may not be immediately obvious (this is often the hardest aspect of reading poetry). This strengthens our analytical skills and improves our ability to interpret complex information.
Algebra: The Language of Logic and Problem-Solving
On the other hand, I love teaching and doing algebra but it is one of the key topics in lessons which causes a lot of students to panic - why are there suddenly letters in maths!? Algebra is a form of structured thinking that forces us to break down complex problems into simpler, solvable parts. While it might not evoke emotions like poetry, algebra equips us with critical life skills in ways we may not immediately recognize.
Logical Thinking and Structure Algebra introduces us to the importance of logical thinking. In solving an equation, we need to follow a set of rules and approach the problem systematically. This type of structured thinking can be applied to any discipline—whether you’re managing finances, making decisions, or even writing a story, understanding cause and effect and finding patterns can be incredibly helpful.
Problem-Solving Skills One of the most important aspects of algebra is the practice of problem-solving. In life, we often face challenges that require creative solutions, and algebra helps us hone this skill.
Foundation for Future Learning Algebra serves as a foundation for other fields of study, particularly in the sciences, economics, and technology. Whether it's physics, engineering, or data science, algebra is often the building block. A solid understanding of algebra opens doors to countless academic and career opportunities, providing a versatile skillset for the future.
